Multi-colored shag carpeting in the living room and family room. Linoleum flooring in the kitchen and bathroom. A family room with wood-paneled walls instead of traditional drywall. Popcorn ceilings. What do all of these things have in common? While today, these features in a house may be considered eye-sores, there was once a time when they were very trendy and attractive. But as the years passed, these not only faded into obscurity, but they gained a reputation for being unappealing. So unappealing, in fact, that the very presence of them in homes today is enough to discourage potential buyers from giving a house a second glance. If you are considering selling your home in the near future, or if you simply want to increase the value of your home for selling potential in distant years, there are upgrades you can make that will be appealing to anyone who sets foot in your house. These improvements will not be tied to a specific decade, where there is a distinct possibility of them becoming dated or over time frowned upon. Here are a few timeless designer trends that will actually increase the value of your home. Finish Your Basement According to Home Light , finishing your basement into another living space for your family not only benefits you in the short term (nothing wrong with more square footage), but when it comes time to sell your home, it will automatically bump your house up into another price bracket. Open The Layout Buyers today tend to favor floor plans that are either completely or partially open around the living room, dining room, and kitchen. Consider knocking down a wall in your home to give the illusion of a spacious layout. Touch Up Exterior Paint Even if painting the whole house isn’t exactly in your budget (or, if the paint is still in pretty good shape), it’s never a bad idea to touch up any flaking or chips, or even just repaint the front door in order to enhance the curb appeal of your home. It’s also recommended to pressure wash the home’s exterior in order to properly remove dirt and mod. While repainting the siding and adding living space to your basement are surefire ways to increase the value of your home, a new garage door system is another guaranteed opportunity to also accomplish this. A garage is a great space to use as a mancave or party room. It has all the benefits of being outside in the fresh air, allowing your guests to mingle outdoors, yet offers shelter from the sun or rain. As a mancave, a garage could be a great spot to relax and unwind after a long day. If your garage is cluttered or dirty, it could use some sprucing up before it’s ready to be a party room, mancave, or even a “she shed.” Read on for how to transform your garage into your new favorite space! Decide what stays and what goes. First thing to do when clearing your garage space: look over your belongings and decide what needs to stay in the garage, and what can go. Separate garbage into piles for trash or recycling, and get rid of those first. Then go through any other belongings - tools, toys, holiday decorations, lawn care and gardening items, boxes of old clothing, etc., and decide what should be kept and what should be moved to another location, sold, or donated. Once your garage is cleared of most clutter, you can get to work on transforming it into an exciting new space. Tidy up. After your garage has been cleared of most items, it’s time to clean it up. Get out a push broom and sweep all the dirt from the floor. Dust any surfaces and remove cobwebs. Wash windows if your garage has them, and replace any light bulbs that might need replacing. Hatch a plan. Once your garage is decluttered and sparking clean (for the most part), you can plan the party space. If you’re making a mancave, decide where your couch or chairs will be, where the TV and entertainment center will sit, and whether you should still save room for practical garage items like vehicles or a workbench. Make it your own. This is the fun part - decorate! You can really put your own spin on the space by painting the walls or hanging posters and artwork. Since garages typically have concrete floors, you can even paint those - although you may prefer to just throw down a large area rug. Upgrade the lighting to edison bulbs or a string of fairy lights. If you’re decorating the space for a party, you can add fun touches such as disco lights, balloons, and streamers. Your garage door can even help make the space special! If weather causes you to keep the door shut, you can decorate the inside of the door as a neat “fourth wall.” On a nice day when the garage door is open, you can suspend balloons from it or even a pinata! Having a new commercial garage door installed is an investment so it’s smart to do some research and educate yourself to make the best choice for your business needs. Will you be loading equipment or merchandise in and out of this doorway? Do you need a fire-safe door?
